Should I buy or not a water filter? Would it be worth it? How much does it cost? What type of filter should I consider?
So many questions! Let's briefly address each one.
We all have different experiences about drinking water, what is sure is that besides the taste or colour, very limited information can be grasped about the quality of the water we drink. There is a lot available on the net about this topic, so I am going to share with you my own experience.
My Own Experience
After drinking tap water out of my home spring back at home in Italy, I never really though about this topic until I moved to cities like Melbourne, or travel to other country. The safest option I though was bottle water, although in country like Australia it costs a fortune!
Should I buy or not a water filter?
After reading and educating myself on the subject, my answer is Yes!
Even if you are renting a place, a non invasive system can be placed under the sink or even the laundry.

What type of water filter?
Since I was going to make the investment and I always been paranoid by chemicals like Aluminium, Floride, Mercury, Lead etc. which most filters fail to eliminate, three years ago I installed a 5 Stage Reverse Osmosis with Re-mineraliser Alkalizer.
Why multiple stages?
If you are interested I am copying here the stages description provided by my filter supplier.
Stage 1: Sediment 1 Micron: This removes dirt, sediments, sand, and other physical particles.
Stage 2: Carbon Block: This reduces chemicals such as chlorine that may be present in your water supply.
Stage 3: 2nd Carbon Block: This further reduces organics, odours, and other chemicals that might be present in you water supply.
Stage 4: Reverse Osmosis Membrane: It has the Dow Filmtec 200 litre per day TFC membrane, the 200 litres is rated at 50 psi (350 kpa). This system has an auto shut-off device that closes off the in-feed supply when the storage tank has filled.
Stage 5: Alkaline: The re-mineraliser (Alkalizer) which contains crushed Marble and or crushed Limestone, it's primary function is to balance the pH to neutral as reverse osmosis water is slightly acidic because the process removes the calcium from the water which acts as a ph buffer. The material contained in the cartridge is a sedimentary rock which is mostly calcium but also contains trace elements of other minerals, we are prevented from supplying a specification sheet as the amount of re-mineralisation is dependant on the pH of the water, if we had the unit tested at say a pH of 6.0 the cartridge would result in an X factor of re-added minerals which would be misleading if the water in your unit on your water supply had a pH of say 6.4 before the re-mineraliser which would result in a lower added amount. The amount of re-added minerals is totally dependant on the pH of the water out of your system so in short the higher the pH the lower the amount of re-added minerals and the lower the final pH the greater the amount of re-added minerals.

Is it worth it?
Since our body is made 70% of water, drinking clean and pristine water is essential for longevity. Unfortunately nowadays thousands of scientific papers show that hundreds of chemicals are present in our water, and more unfortunately not only it overloads our liver in cleaning those toxins, but many man-made chemicals are very difficult for the body to eliminate. A simple water test to any laboratory will shock you.
So the solution for me become clear. Invest in the best water filter I could find!
How much does it cost?
The filter I chose cost me $900.00 online. Within a week I had it installed in my laundry. Yes, not in the kitchen. Why? Because I didn't like having two taps, one for the normal water and one for the filtered one. They do sell integrated taps - but they cost a fortune! So, I have the filter in my laundry, which happens to be in the same area as the kitchen. I fill up my glass bottle and the job is done!
Before this filter I was buying jag water filter, although after one year, I began to have allergies. So I started buying the most cost-effective box bottle water. Each box of 6 bottles 1,5 liters, used to cost me $1.16 per bottle. Since I drink about 4 bottles a day, I was consuming 1,460 bottle a year and spending $1,693.00.
As a result, instead of spending almost $1,700 in bottles of water a year, I now spend once a year $160.00 for replacing my filters - saving myself $1,540.00. And this calculation is based on one person, imagine how much can you save if you have a family.

Of course, our healthy and longevity is priceless, although I am the first guilty of not having buying a proper water filter for well over a decade..
